Fell Of Good Golf

Youve heard it said dozens of times. Golf is a game of feel. You just know instinctively when somethings right or wrong for you.

It sounds a little confusing, doesnt it? Lets try to take that vague feeling and put it into words and action.

First off, lets address the technique of swinging with all your might. If you swing really hard, then you cant get the feel of a correctly hit ball and your muscles dont learn the feel of correct balance. When players have the feel of the shot, their muscles and sense of touch are tuned in to the correct gauge and balance and they just know they can hit the ball.

When you want to lunge at the ball, your power should be developed by twisting your body. If you learn this, it wont take 3 or 4 years before youre hitting the ball a good distance. When you keep failing with a certain shot, just stop and think what youre doing, what youre trying to accomplish. Dont try any certain method unless you have a definite purpose for using it.

Always remember the basics. Think in your mind how it feels to prepare properly for a shot.

One important point is that its not necessary to feel the power during the stroke. You want to swing easily. Its the energy thats transferred to the ball that counts. Get rid of every little detail that destroys your balance and youll get on the right track. Cut out everything thats not comfortable. Your ability to keep your balance and be comfortable is the measure of the amount of power you can use successfully. Many players lift their heads at the last instant. This doesnt add power to the stroke. It actually takes power away from it.

It may sound tricky but you really want to be as comfortable as possible while playing a game and to do things as easily, flexibly and fluidly as possible. Much of this comfortability is purely mental.

Make sure you keep your eye on the ball while youre moving. Thats what counts. When youre doing things comfortably your strength is being properly applied.

The second you brace your muscles, youre moving away from the correct way of playing. If you want to see if your method is right, check your comfortability level. If you get better results with your own method then follow your own method and dont try to imitate someone else. If you want to learn from someone, ask them why theyre swinging in a certain way and if you can learn the reason then you can apply the knowledge in your own way. Just trying to imitate someone elses swing doesnt benefit you.

Over time, youll acquire the ability to know what shot feels right, what club feels best, what decision you should make. Thats the feel. The instinct. The touch of greatness!

Wandering Hips In Your Golf Swing?

  • Do you have problems with topping the golf ball?
  • Do you have problems with topping the golf ball?
  • Do you hit the ground behind the ball?
  • Do you sometimes hit the golf ball with weak and high results?
  • Do you feel a loss of power with some of your swings with any club?
  • Do you have problems hitting the ball near the sweet spot of the clubface?

All of these problems (and more) could be happening because yourhips move in various directions during all parts of your swingmovements. If your hips are moving about then you know that yourlegs are moving. Your body will also be moving or it will betwisting and hunching out of good posture.

This instructional article will show you what to do to stop"wandering hips" from ruining your golf swing. And, the solutionis unusual and will demand some attention in your early effortsto control your hips.

On my website I have a video clip which shows too much hipmovement in my swing. This hip sway causes an unstable and weakfoundation. It is difficult to generate power because thisswaying places you in unnatural positions.

The golf swing demands balance. Swaying hips will cause loss ofbalance or a feeling that you are about to lose your balance.Your mind quickly senses the loss of power and the loss ofbalance. Instinctively, messages go to your arms and hands todo something to make up for a weakening swing. Almost alwaysthe hands or arms make a wrong move or a movement which is outof time with the leg and body movements.

In this clip you can also see that my forward sway causes my clubto reach the bottom of its swing arc past the ball towards myright foot (I'm a leftie.) This would result in poor contactof the golf ball or a complete miss.

THE MOVEMENT WHICH ALLOWS HIP SWAY

Years ago a friend told me that my hips wandered erraticallyduring my golf swing. He also said that there was no patternin the hip movements from swing to swing.

We did not have a golf pro to turn to for help on this. I hadto solve the problem on my own.

I used to teach physical education from Grades 1 to 9.I recalled the various age groups of young people tryingto learn athletic movements for some of the sports.

Why were my hips moving? I could stop them from doing this butI had to give too much attention to them during my swing. Eventightening my hip muscles did not solve the problem.

I stood in front of a floor length mirror and did my impressionof Elvis Presley (uh, the late rock and roll guy who couldreally sway his hips.)

OK! At least I wiggled my hips around while watching what washappening in the mirror.

If I moved my hips in any direction my back would arch out ofits natural upright position. This is not good to have golf swingmovements with your back out of position. Golf's 'bad backcemetery' is too full of former golfers who succumbed to injuredbacks. (By the way, the techniques which I teach for basic swingmovements and control did bring one man out of this back injury. He was able to golf with his grandson and his former golfbuddies.)

If I tightened my hip muscles and made my hips move then my wholebody swayed back and forth like a tree. You do not want thischange of positioning of your upper body during your swingmovements. It becomes very difficult to re-align yourselfto the ball as the club is hitting the golf ball.

Somewhere, an area of my body was collapsing to permit thisunwanted hip movement.

The answer came from observing my movements in the floor-lengthmirror while keeping my hip muscles firm. My body was swayinglike a tree but my feet were not moving.

The only part of me which could allow this 'tree-like' sway wasmy ankle joints. I yanked up my pant legs (what a ghastlysight!) I swayed some more.

Sure enough there was a lot of movement in my ankle joints.

In 2 clips on my website I use exaggerated hip and leg movementsto show how much bending of the ankles there can be. You will seehow far away my legs and hips move from their start position.

Can you imagine how hard it would be to push a car out of a snowbank or mud puddle if your hips were wandering or swaying?

CORRECTING THE FAULTY MOVEMENT

Prior to producing any swing movements I would firm my lower legmuscles to prevent joint movement in my ankles. No wandering hipsand a much stronger connection to the ground while I swungthe golf club was the result.

You will have much better control in your lower body by firmingyour lower leg muscles.

Two clips on my website show that my hips rotate around mytailbone. There is no wandering or swaying of my hips or legs.My lower legs stay in proper alignment with my feet. There isNO bending at my ankles.

My turning movements are balanced. They are controlled and havepower from a solid connection to the ground. Sloppy movementsat my ankles which would rob some of the power of my turnare prevented.

Firming your lower leg muscles locks your ankles in place. Thiswill help you to have a more precise golf swing for powerhitting and for delicate chips around the green.

Practice at home in front of a mirror to train your anklesto remain at a desired level of firmness to better controlyour leg and hip movements.

A good thought is to picture yourself running through roughterrain or uneven ground. The way to do this without twistingor breaking an ankle is to tighten your ankle joints.

Oh yes! This better control of your hips will help to protectyour lower back from injury.

Hopefully, in the near future, I will show you how to protecta tender or injured back while you continue golfing.

Top 14 Tips for Selecting A Golf School

With the increase in number of schools for learning Golf, it has become necessary for the learner to find out a school that suits him best from all the angles. Here are the tips for selecting a Golf School:

1. When the institute was established and how many members they have. Since when they are into coaching.

2. What type of golf course they have? Is it 18 holes, 22 holes, 27 holes or more?

3. Do they organize tournaments regularly (a lot of learning is possible by the learner by simply watching good players)?

4. The school should have sound credentials. If possible, find out from other sources about the claims they make.

5. Try to get the record of accomplishment of the schools by talking to people who either are learning there or have completed the training and now practicing there or elsewhere.

6. Get details from other such schools, make your own assessment/comparison and decide. If a school offers any guarantee, the same should be crosschecked with schools.

7. Find out the details of the program they have for the learners. What methodology they follow in coaching the students.

8. How many students have completed their training and where they are. Have they trained/produced national/international golfers?

9. What kind of facilities they have? Do they have the facility to learn Uphill, Downhill, Side hill, Sand and trouble shots?

10. Can one learn all types of shots during training or some shots they do not teach during training?

11. Do they have separate ground for training?

12. What type of facilities for learning/improving the Swing. Do they have a Video that can analyze the swing? If yes, it will be better because one can learn by seeing his shots on the video and find out where and what is wrong in it. You can improve/ accelerate your learning curve by watching and practicing.

13. Do they customize the training program according to the needs / skills of the individual or these are common to all. This may be very crucial in deciding as one would always like to have a tailor made learning package so that he can get best out of the training.

14. Do they have covered ground for learning, this is important because if it rains continuously for days together one may lose his training time resulting into loss of total training days/hours?

Follow these tips, and selecting the right golf school becomes a no brainer.

Discover How Golf Schools Can Help You Play Better

The objective of joining a Golf school is to learn the golfand become a good player if not a great player.

Swing is most important for every golfer. A more powerful, consistent golf swing is attainable for every golfer. Thelearner must know how to get more distance with all clubsand increase accuracy at the same time.

Swing Technology helps in learning the golf swing and otheraspects of the sport.

Services Offered

The learner should always focus on the services offered byGolf Schools and not on their tall claims like "We have wonMaximum number of Teacher of the Year award" or we havenationwide training schools etc. One should see and ifpossible take the opinion of somebody, who has alreadytaken training from that school. Some salient features thatmust be part of the services offered by golf school, whiledeciding the training school.

1. The class size should range between 4 to 16 students andthe teacher ratio should not be more than 4-1. However, 2-1would be ideal, if possible.2. The coach must be an ace golfer and should haveexcellent communication skills to make the learnerunderstand the game and feel comfortable and secure.3. The skills and the requirements must be clearlyunderstood by the coach and he should be able to tailor itaccording to the needs of the individual. The groups ofstudents must be made according to the abilities.4. Apart from a good coach the institute must also haveother facilities like:i. Latest Video Analysis Equipments,ii. Launch Monitor Technology, iii. Swing Learning Aids, iv. Should be able to scientifically measure a golfer'scurrent swing and pinpoint his or her weaknesses,v. Help develop a plan for measurable improvement.vi. The staff should know the game and should be able toteach; so all golfers get all benefits where it reallyneeds - on the golf course.

5. Last but not the least, the price. The cost of learningmust be justifiable.

Thus, one should analyze the Services offered by GolfSchools taking the points mentioned above intoconsideration, before deciding on the Golf School.

Stretching with Your Golf Partner

If you want to improve your game you have got to be in condition to do the job.

Stretching is often an over looked part of the game by many golfers.

Its all about the swing. If youre stiff you wont be able to consistently make your golf swing to your maximum potential. Stretching improves flexibility, which allows you to move your joints through their full range of motion. Flexibility is a key element of golf fitness; it can enhance physical performance and relieve muscle tension and stiffness. You should stretch after a warm-up and/or when cooling down after a workout, since it is easier and safer to stretch a warm muscle than a cold one. Warm-ups bring blood to the muscles and make injuries from stretching less likely.

Warm up first then stretch.

Womens Golf Equality

Women have been trying for years to be viewed as equal competition for men, especially in sports. Unfortunately, society fails to measure womens abilities on the same scale as mens abilities. Golf is one of few sports that show great potential for women and men to compete on the same level. Recently, there have been many developments in the world of womens golf.

Womens golf has been become extremely popular over the past few years and there are currently as many professional women golfers as there are men. Golf equipment companies have also recognized the amount of women interested in the sport and have customized many pieces of golf equipment including golf clubs, drivers and golf bags to be more comfortable for women. You can also have your own golf equipment custom-made; making golfing more comfortable and efficient for women since mens clubs were often to big. These are just a few of the steps which have been taken to welcome women into the world of golf and ensure that they are comfortable and treated as equally as possible.

Womens golf associations such as the LPGA have also contributed to the popularity of womens golf and given women the respect they deserve. Women golfers are now featured in Golf Digest magazine, Golf for Women and a number of other magazines dedicated strictly to womens golf. Videos and TV shows are also contributing to the popularity of this sport and giving women the drive they need to pursue careers in this field.

It was not until earlier this year, that womens golf took a leaping step in the right direction when professional golfer and top LPGA player, Annika Sorenstam was told she could play against the men in a PGA tournament. Many people predicted how they thought Sorenstam would do when she teed-off against some of the best male golfers in the world. Some people had positive encouragement to contribute while others were chauvinistic and down-right rude.

Phil Mickelson, 2nd in the overall moneymaking standings last year, had no problem playing against a woman and claimed that he thought Sorenstam would end up 20th overall, when she predicted herself to be 28th. Other golf professionals were not so eager to give Sorenstam the benefit of the doubt. Vijah Singh actually resigned from the tournament because he felt he could not play with a women. He claimed that Sorenstam simply did not belong in a mens tournament.

Nonetheless, having a woman play in the PGA, even for a short while, was a huge accomplishment which could potentially pave the road for future development in womens golf.

How Not to Mulligan Your Business Golf Game

Golf season has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is always golf season somewhere in the world. Those who are savvy in business golf etiquette will finesse as many deals on the links as in the boardroom.

Spending four hours on a course with a potential client or business affiliate offers you a golden opportunity to build either bridges or chasms. Many believe that how a person conducts himself or herself on the golf course reflects how they perform in business situations. A business golfing date is a time to put your best golfing shoe forward.

According to biz etiquette experts, following these guidelines will help you build the bridge and land that deal.

1. First, if you are likely to lose your cool when your game is bad, stay off the "business" green altogether. If your golfing history is one of losing emotional control and acting badly, do not, repeat, do not, play business golf. You will not make a good business impression.

2. Be sure you know the rules of good golf etiquette in general. Your host will not be impressed if you make a bad impression at his/her country club or offend golfing buddies.

3. No cheating in your scorekeeping or in any other way. This is not the way to build trust.

4. When unsure about a rule, discuss it with your golf opponent. Abide by whatever is decided. Demonstrate your trustworthiness and show that you are a person who keeps your word.

5. Spend your time on the links building relationships. Avoid talking deals until the 19th hole. Experts advise that business talk during the game should be of a casual nature. Business talk should not occur before the 5th hole or after the 15th hole.

6. No cell phones or beepers on the course.

7. Dress appropriately in attire that will take you from the links to the clubhouse. Denims, sleeveless shirts and short shorts are not acceptable.

8. In business golf, invite your guest to play first at the first hole. At other holes, the person with the lowest hole score in the preceding round tees first.

9. If invited to play business golf, offer to pay green fees, cart rental, etc. If you have invited someone to play, be prepared to cover the costs.

10. Drinking alcohol is not your best choice when playing business golf. If you drink at all, drink only if the host offers, and have no more than two.

11. Prepare a handicap card and be honest about your handicap. 12. Play the best game you can. Playing badly to "let the other person win" can be perceived as insulting and will damage your credibility.

13. If your opponent prefers to walk rather than use a cart, you will walk also. When using a cart, join your opponent on the green when he gets out to play or to look for a ball.

14. If playing in Asia, be prepared to bet. In other countries, abide by local customs. If wagering, keep the bets at a friendly level.

15. Arrive early to get organized and to practice before tee time.

16. Avoid whining, swearing and making excuses.

17. Avoid talking or otherwise making noise while other golfers are playing.

18. Avoid coaching or giving unsolicited advice to your opponent.

19. Plan ahead and identify business goals for the day. If you are the host, be sure to invite the right people who can make decisions. Business golf blends business and golf. Having a goal for the day is as important as during any other business meeting.
