How to learn golfing also entails learning its etiquette above everything else. It is quite ironic if one really knows by heart the rules, equipment and other stuff about a certain sport yet have forgotten how to do it in the best manner.
Although much in association with other sports uses such term, it is more closely attributed with golf. It may be translated literally as manners in playing the sport, but it entails more. Learning etiquette is important because it can affect the safety of the golfers, the pace of the play (whether it will be exciting or not), as well as it also dictates the quality of the golf course.
Even if you are still learning golf, it is inevitable that you will have to play continuously with others, newbie's and professionals alike, and should know how to play the game well. And so, what is the proper etiquette when playing golf? Here are some things that you have to learn by heart:
Keep out of danger - keep the play safe; here are some do's and don'ts
- keep your distance when someone is swinging his/her club and make sure to check the distance of your colleagues if it is your turn to hit that ball
- do not practice your swing in the direction when someone else is standing; although you are trying to practice your swing by hitting an imaginary swing, other debris such as grasses or your club might hit pebbles and this might land on the person in front of you. So, to avoid hurting others, never swing in the direction where people are present.
- Do not strike on your ball if you are not certain that others are in a safe distance
- Keep the game enjoyable - maintain a good pace
- don't keep other players waiting; be sure to be always on cue especially if your turn is close. Make sure that you are close to the hitting range but not as close for you to get hurt
- don't spend time looking for lost balls; although players are given five minutes to look for lost balls, you might as well allow others to continue playing even without you in sight. One can do this by waving through others so that they can continue playing.
- Keep your pace with others especially those in front of you; if there is an open space ahead of you, let another faster group take the turn
- push carts in places as stated; follow guidelines and don't push your carts on places not stipulated
- repair your ball marks on the greens
- repair your divots in the fairway
- as much as possible do not take your divot on a practice swing
